The brief

A new concourse and baggage system added while the airport kept every flight on schedule.

The airport could not lose a gate, a security lane or a bag belt during peak travel. The new concourse connected to a live terminal on one side and an active apron on the other. The baggage system had to be tied into the existing one without a single bag going to the wrong flight.

How we built it

The approach.

  1. 01

    Airside rules from day one

Badged crews, escorted vehicles and daily foreign object sweeps kept the apron safe for aircraft next to the work.

  2. 02

    Phased around the flight schedule

Noisy and disruptive work moved to overnight windows, planned week by week with airport operations.

  3. 03

    Baggage cutover rehearsed

The new belts ran thousands of test bags before the tie-in, which happened between the last arrival and the first departure.

  4. 04

    Operational readiness trials

Airline and airport staff walked through gates, screening and boarding before the first passengers arrived.

“The airport never closed, so neither did our planning. Every night shift started with the next morning’s departures.”
