Highway corridor crews pass one million work hours without a lost-time injury

A milestone earned shift by shift, by every crew and trade partner on the corridor.

The crews rebuilding the highway corridor have passed one million work hours without a lost-time injury. It is an internal milestone, not a trophy. It was earned one shift at a time, mostly at night, beside live traffic, by MarkWester crews and trade partners who treated every closure as if it were the first.

What made the difference

Highway work under traffic has its own hazards. Moving vehicles a few feet from the work zone. Heavy equipment backing in the dark. Crane picks over lanes that reopen at dawn. The practices behind this milestone are not new, but the corridor team applied them every shift without exception.

  • Pre-task planning every shift. Each crew walked its work area and reviewed the hazards before starting, and updated the plan when conditions changed.
  • Positive protection. Wherever the phasing allowed, crews worked behind concrete barrier rather than cones, and work zone access points were planned as carefully as the work itself.
  • Lighting and visibility. Night operations ran under planned lighting, with high-visibility gear and spotters assigned to equipment moving near people.
  • Stop-work authority. Anyone on the corridor, from a first-week laborer to a trade partner foreman, could stop the work. When they did, the response was a thank you.
  • One standard for everyone. Trade partners worked under the same orientation, the same expectations and the same daily huddles as our own crews.

Nobody on this job worked safely for a milestone. They did it so everyone could go home in the morning. The milestone is just what that looks like added up.

The work continues

A milestone like this can make a team comfortable, and comfort is a hazard of its own. The corridor team marked the day with a crew breakfast, then went straight back to the morning huddle. The hours keep counting, and the expectations do not change. Our thanks go to every crew member and trade partner on the corridor for the care they bring to each other every shift.
